The Department of Consumer, Apparel, and
Retail Studies is Turning 100!

Although clothing and textiles have been important subjects taught at UNCG since the school was founded in 1891, the clothing and textiles program was officially named as a department in 1917. Called the Department of Clothing and Textiles and Housing, the department would later be named Clothing and Textiles until the early 1990s, when it became the Department of Textile Products Design and Marketing. The department was given its current name, Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies, in 2005.

Even though the department now bears a different name than when it began one hundred years ago, its legacy and commitment to higher education at UNCG has remained unchanged. Help us to mark the department’s 100th anniversary by joining us in honoring its enduring impact on students, alumni, and the broader industry community.

Exciting centennial celebration plans are in the works for the 2017-18 academic year, starting with a gala dinner, silent auction, and fashion show on Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Revolution Mill Events Center in Greensboro.

The evening begins at 6:00 with hors d’oeuvres and a chance to mingle with CARS faculty and alumni while bidding on fun and interesting items as part of our silent auction. This will be followed by a buffet dinner and entertainment in the form of a salon-style fashion show depicting styles created by current and former students and influenced by the department’s 10 decades of history. Cost to attend the Gala is $75 per ticket ($45 for 2012 graduates and later), but only if you buy your tickets early. Ticket prices will increase after July 31, 2017.
