She has previously owned her own businesses and has worked in the non-profit sector. Beasley’s teaching is informed by Freire’s critical pedagogy and David Kolb’s theory of experiential learning. She likes to think of herself as a key that opens possibilities, creative ideas and questions in students’ minds to encourage them to think critically.
She believes that to be successful, students need to be equal partners in the learning process. She offers students respectful interaction and believes in the importance of active listening as a tool to open-mindedness. When not at work, Beasley likes to travel to destinations in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, where she hikes, backpacks and immerses herself in the local culture. She has enjoyed extreme sports, and has walked on glaciers, rappelled down waterfalls, scuba dived and was an avid bike racer. She still loves anything outdoors. Her favorite quote comes from Oprah Winfrey: “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”
