Background
Monti Beasley, M.A., is a lecturer in the Department of Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Hospitality & Tourism at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she teaches Business Communication (MKT-309). Her teaching competencies include: Introduction to Communication, Small Group Communication, Leadership Communication, Team Building and Public Speaking. Beasley earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She graduated Summa Cum Laude, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Her study interests include: shared leadership in small groups and principled negotiation in conflict management communication. She has previously owned her own businesses and has worked in the non-profit sector. Beasley’s teaching is informed by Freire’s critical pedagogy and David Kolb’s theory of experiential learning. She likes to think of herself as a key that opens possibilities, creative ideas and questions in students’ minds to encourage them to think critically.
She believes that to be successful, students need to be equal partners in the learning process. She offers students respectful interaction and believes in the importance of active listening as a tool to open-mindedness. When not at work, Beasley likes to travel to destinations in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, where she hikes, backpacks and immerses herself in the local culture. She has enjoyed extreme sports, and has walked on glaciers, rappelled down waterfalls, scuba dived and was an avid bike racer. She still loves anything outdoors. Her favorite quote comes from Oprah Winfrey: “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”
