Anne Beeson Royalty is Department Head and Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, Bryan School of Business and Economics, Bryan School of Business and Economics, UNC Greensboro.

Professor Royalty earned her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Ph.D. from Yale University. Before coming to UNCG in 2021, Dr. Royalty was on the faculty of the Department of Economics at IUPUI and, prior to that, the Department of Economics at Stanford University.

Professor Royalty’s current research focuses on two main areas:  reframing the U.S. health insurance debate based on motivations for prosocial behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic and the organization of physician practices and its effect on delivery and cost of care. Among other questions, she has analyzed the employment effects of the Affordable Care Act, how workers choose among health plans offered by the employer, how much workers value the health insurance provided by the employer, the effect of the income tax preference for fringe benefits on the provision of employer-provided health insurance, the sources of health care cost growth, and the effects of physician market power on prices for physician services. Professor Royalty has published in a number of academic journals including Journal of Health Economics, Journal of the American Medical Association, Health Affairs, Health Services Research, Inquiry, Medical Care Research and Review, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Public Economics, and Industrial and Labor Relations Review. Her research has been supported by numerous grants including grants from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation and the National Institute for Health Care Management. In Spring of 2010, Professor Royalty was named Outstanding Distinguished Faculty at the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.
