Background

David Upton joined the faculty of UNCG in 2005 and currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting and Finance. Dr. Upton received his Ph.D. in Accounting, with a minor in Psychology, from Indiana University. He previously taught at Massey University in New Zealand and has also served as a visiting professor at the Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) in Worms, Germany where he taught a course in the International Business Administration Master’s Program. Dr. Upton’s teaching interests and current course instruction at UNCG are in the areas of Cost and Managerial Accounting. His service to the Bryan School and University includes member and current chair of the ACF Scholarships Committee and membership on the MSA Program Committee, among others.

Dr. Upton’s research interests are in the areas of managerial accounting and tax with a behavioral/experimental emphasis, and various topics relevant to practitioner audiences. He has published in multiple discipline-based journals including Accounting, Organizations, & Society, Journal of Management Accounting Research, and Critical Perspectives on Accounting among others. He has also published in practitioner journals including The CPA Journal, Strategic Finance, and the Journal of Financial Service Professionals. He is a member of the American Accounting Association, the Institute of Management Accountants, where he currently serves as president of the Piedmont-Triad, NC Chapter, and is a past member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand.
