Admission to the PhD in Economics program requires a master’s degree in economics comparable to the MA in Applied Economics offered at UNCG. In order for a master’s degree to be considered comparable to the UNCG MA, your graduate coursework should include the following:
- Two graduate-level courses in microeconomics
- Two graduate-level courses in econometrics
- One graduate-level course in macroeconomics
Prospective students with a master’s degree in economics from another institution may be required to take additional courses if their master’s degree is not sufficiently comparable to the MA in Applied Economics offered at UNCG. Students interested in earning a PhD in economics who do not have a master’s degree in economics or who have a master’s degree in economics that is significantly different from the UNCG MA in Applied Economics program should apply to our combined MA/PhD in Economics program.
In addition to the transcript from a master’s degree in economics, the admission decision is based on an evaluation of four criteria:
- GRE scores (quantitative score should fall above the 70th percentile)
- Three letters of recommendation
- Superior performance in graduate economics courses
- A personal statement
Your personal statement should be approximately 1-2 pages in length and should contain a description of how your academic background has prepared you to pursue graduate work in economics and how receiving a doctoral degree in applied economics will help you achieve your career goals. Please do not upload a writing sample or previous publication.
