The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board has awarded its prestigious academic scholarships to undergraduate and graduate accounting students since 2011. For the 2021-2022 academic year 253 students were selected from schools across the U.S., among them Jana Marroquin of UNC Greensboro’s Bryan School of Business and Economics.
“Congratulations to our PCAOB Scholars who achieved this distinction during an unquestionably challenging period for students everywhere,” said PCAOB Acting Chairperson Duane M. DesParte. “The PCAOB is pleased to help support these dedicated individuals on their paths to becoming leaders in accounting and auditing.”
Marroquin is currently studying accounting and business administration, planning to finish her undergraduate work by December. She aims to take her Certified Public Accountant exam early next year and is eyeing the completion of a Master of Science in Accounting by December 2022.
“I was honored to be selected for such an amazing recognition,” she said. “I now feel the responsibility of representing all of my classmates and professors at the Bryan School and can guarantee I will work extremely hard to make my Spartans proud.”
A member of the Lloyd International Honors College, Marroquin has accepted an offer to join Truist as a member of its 2022 Leadership Development Program. She will be working with Truist’s Audit Services Team in the meantime.
“I chose the Bryan School because of its academic excellence and high recognition,” she said. “When I became a Spartan two years ago, I wasn’t sure of how I was going to do it; but, my amazing professors have been extremely supportive since day one and have created a path for me to follow my dreams.”
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 provides that funds generated from the collection of PCAOB monetary penalties must be used to fund a merit scholarship program for students in accredited accounting degree programs. The PCAOB Scholars Program was created to identify eligible students and to award funds through the students’ educational institutions.
Since the program’s inception in 2011, the PCAOB has awarded $16.23 million in scholarships to 1,623 recipients.
