For Incoming Bryan School Business Students

Getting Started at the Bryan School

Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance into the Bryan School of Business and Economics! We are excited to have you as a new member of the growing Bryan School family.

Orientation & Welcome Reception

The Bryan School Graduate Programs Office hosts a brief orientation for new students before the start of each semester. This event will provide you with the opportunity to meet several faculty members, network with other students, and ask questions.

Student Orientations

* Campus students must attend the in person orientation, virtual students have the option to choose which orientation to attend.

**Please note: Students admitted to the Early Career track (regardless of whether online or on-campus) are required to attend the In-Person Orientation.

Preparing to Start

Your first step should be to download and review the Newly Admitted Student Checklist to get started on the right foot. Contact your advisor about any questions you may have as you review this list. They are here to help you feel confident and prepared to begin your graduate program.

Your Curriculum

Curious about what classes you’ll be taking? Here’s a reminder of what your core classes will be and options for concentrations. By clicking on the course name, you’ll be able to see a sample syllabus from a past semester.

Apps and Tools

UNC Greensboro uses a variety of online apps, programs, and tools to make communication, access to resources, and submitting assignments easy. Below are just a few of the key apps and tools that you will use as a graduate student, whether you are taking face-to-face or online courses.

Canvas

Canvas is a cloud-based Learning Management System that UNCG uses to communicate course information (syllabi, assignments, meeting dates, etc.) and provides a platform for class discussions and student communication with peers and faculty. Canvas is used for all online courses and the majority of face-to-face classes. Watch this Canvas Student Orientation Tour for a better understanding of how to use Canvas.

UNCGenie

UNCGenie is a critical tool for accessing and updating your student information, registering for courses, checking final grades and degree standing, applying for financial aid and paying for tuition, and much more. You will need your UNCG Student ID number and a specific PIN that you set in order to log in to UNCGenie.

Starfish

When you have completed your first semester, most academic advisors will request that you meet with or contact them for a check-in meeting, to give guidance on what courses are open to you in the coming semester, and to give you your registration code. Starfish is accessed through Canvas, or a shortcut can be found in the iSpartan toolbar on the University’s main webpage.

Excel Prep Course

The Bryan School offers a free, Canvas-based Excel Prep Course for Bryan graduate students to brush up on their Excel skills before getting back in the classroom. Email [email protected] with your UNCG username to be enrolled in the course.

Additional Resources

These resources will be useful throughout your graduate experience, from tutorials on Excel and refreshers on quantitative skills, to campus and community resources!

Getting Ready for Classes

Check out to see if your course syllabi have been uploaded to the Syllabi Directory. If there isn’t a current version, you should be able to see a syllabus from the most recent offering of that course.

Meet your professors! Find out more about what courses faculty members teach, their background, as well as research and publications.

Whether you’re an online or on-campus student, the UNCG Bookstore has a lot to offer! If you aren’t sure what materials you’ll need for your courses, you can use the Find Course Materials tool to look up what textbooks are needed for your classes.

Your Spartan Card is not only your official University ID, but serves many other purposes. It can provide access to certain locations and events on or around campus, is your Jackson Library card, is your tool to access print stations around campus, and can be used as a debit card by loading it with SpartanCash. Visit the Spartan Card Center at 106 Moran Commons (the UNCG Dining Hall) or submit a photo online for your card. Online students may also request a Spartan Card.

New Student Advising

As an incoming student, you will need to meet with your respective academic advisor in order to review your Plan of Study and obtain an advising code to register for courses. Refer to your Bryan School welcome email to find your advisor’s name, as well as contact information on how to set up a meeting with them. Bryan Graduate Program Advisor information is also included below. To schedule an advising appoint, you will need your UNCG Student ID, which is included on your Graduate School Acceptance Letter.
