Students who major in International Business or Retail and Consumer Studies with an emphasis in Global Retail Management have requirements for foreign language competency and/or international experiences. For some students, their personal life experience may be considered in lieu of completing academic credits. Confirm with your assigned Academic Advisor that this is the required form before submitting.

Non-native speakers of English must use this form to request exemption from foreign language requirement International Business majors are required to complete six credits of language study at the intermediate level (203 & 204 at UNCG). Retail and Consumer Studies with the emphasis area in Global Retail Management are required to complete six credit hours of language study at or above the 300 level. Students with proficiencies gained through non-credit experiences are asked to complete a proficiency assessment that includes an evaluation of speaking, listening, reading and writing. This proficiency assessment must come from a qualified evaluator that is not related to the student.

Provide details of how you learned vocabulary, grammar, composition, and literature as well as an appreciation of culture through language. Demonstrate an understanding of customs, traditions, and non-Anglophone ways of life.

Support Documentation
Verification of education and experience must be provided before the exemption request will be processed. Appropriate documentation may include but is not limited to: a National Passport, Visa, or Birth Certificate with photo identification, diplomas or certificates of study, or statements of formal language assessment from a reputable source. Language assessments must include an evaluation of listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities. Insufficient supporting documentation could result in the exemption being denied. International Experience Exemption Request
The cornerstone of the International Business major is an international experience. To meet requirements for the major students must complete at least one approved international experience. Study abroad at UNCG is administered by the International Programs Center – any program administered by that office is already approved. Students who are participating in an UNCG faculty-led, semester or year-long exchange are not required to complete this form.

Students that did not complete any of the UNCG approved programs are required to submit this request form. Work with your assigned Bryan School advisor to confirm your experience complies with these three international experience characteristics.
- Sufficient intellectual content so that students engage in critical and reflective thinking before, during, and after the time that they are engaged in cultures different from the cultures that they grew up in. The content may include ethnographic study of the cultures in which they are immersed.
- A level of immersion in a culture other their own that gives students culturally transforming experiences.
- A transnational character that adds to the cross-cultural nature of the experience almost always requiring the student to travel and spend significant time beyond U.S. borders
