Accounting and Finance MSA Award

Shortly after arriving at UNCG, Accounting and Finance Department Head Randy Elder asked the department to approve a new Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) Scholarship Fund. He explains, “We want to strengthen and grow the MSA program, and that means making it more affordable for qualified students in need.” While the fund has grown slowly, in the last year the fund has received several gifts from Accounting and Finance Advisory Board members, faculty, and alumni. “We are certainly grateful that several donors have provided significant support for named scholarships in the past two years”, says Elder. “The MSA Scholarship fund provides another way for interested alumni to support current UNCG MSA students.”

David and Nancy Schwenke Scholarship Fund

David Schwenke, BS ’76, and his wife, Nancy, both CPAs, created a new endowment to support top students preparing for careers in accounting. In addition, they have also made current gifts to provide scholarship funding for current students. Scholarships are targeted to either undergraduate or graduate students, based on academic achievement. Three MSA candidates were selected as Schwenke Scholars for 2020-21: Amy Rae, Emily Spann, and Ashley Fleming. “We are very grateful for the Schwenke’s continued generosity. Their support has really had a positive impact in building our program,” notes Amanda Cromartie, director of the MSA program.

Schwenke began his career in accounting shortly after graduating from UNC Greensboro, working for large firms before establishing Schwenke & Associates, P.C. in 1998 with Nancy, a graduate of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. They provide tax and accounting services to clients in Boulder, Colorado. “The accounting profession has been a rewarding career for us and we wanted to establish the David and Nancy Schwenke scholarship fund to provide UNCG accounting students an opportunity to further their education in our chosen field.”
